Loft Conversions – Are They Worth the Cost?
If you have a rather large, spacious attic you may have considered transforming it into a useful room of your house. If your loft is currently hording realms of junk you could be wasting the space up there which could be converted into another bedroom or something similar. Utilising your loft space doesn’t only provide you with extra storage or living space, it can also add value to your home, which is very beneficial when you decide to sell.

Some brave and enthusiastic homeowners decide to DIY the project, although the amount of work involved can really take its toll and there are certain aspects of safety to consider. In some houses it can be easier than you think to fall through the ceiling if you take a wrong step! If you haven’t performed loft conversions as part of your day job it’s highly advisable that you call in a professional to get the work done.
Before deciding on a loft conversion you’ll need to calculate whether the space you have is actually worth converting into a living space. Although your loft space may look large while it’s empty you’ll have to use exact measurements to consider whether it’s feasible to use the space for your intended purpose. Often the sizing issue lies with how much height you have as the roof slopes, this can often fall short of being used as a bedroom due to there not being enough height to completely stand up in it.
Once you’ve established that your loft is suitable for conversion you need to decide what purpose you want it to serve. Loft conversions can serve well as a bedroom for a young adult who wants their own independence. They’ll feel they have their own space which is separate from the rest of the house. If you have enough loft space you could even opt for a small en-suite adjoining the bedroom. It doesn’t have to be an incredibly large space as you could browse through cloakroom bathroom suites, which are ideal for fitting into small spaces. Converting your loft space into a bedroom with en-suite can considerably increase the value of your home as extra bedrooms and bathrooms are always highly sought after.
If you work from home you could convert your loft space into a home office. It could be the perfect place to escape from the hustle and bustle taking place in the rest of your home and really concentrate your work. The additional room can be convenient for storing and organising paperwork away from the rest of the house, that way you have complete control over who has access to it.
If you have a loft space that could be used as another room it’s definitely worth considering. Although it may initially be rather costly, the value it adds to your home and lifestyle makes it worthwhile. Utilise the additional space wisely by converting it into a room you will actually use – not just a more attractive dumping ground.
