The truth about the AC, cut those bills in half!
The Department of Energy calculates that hearing and cooling account for nearly half of the energy used in a typical home. That’s more than the all the light bulbs, the dishwasher, the refrigerator, the water heater and the washer dryer- combined.
Replacing a standard air conditioner set at 72 degrees with an energy efficienct model set at 78 can cut your cooling costs in HALF, according to Xcel Energy, a regional utility, similar to Com-Ed. A programable thermostat can save as much as 12%. A ceiling fan can lower a room’s temperature by several degrees. Even something as switching to compact fluorescent light bulbs can make a big difference in electricity bills. (source WSJ)

Many people ask what are the easiest improvements that can be done with quick payback- Windows and doors are a big weak point in building construction. You would be amazed at the number of homes we visited when the builder neglected to put insulation around the windows creating an exchange of air all year round. Second up would be the appliance and mechanical systems. Upgrading your water heater, furnace and AC unit to 93% or better will make drastically reduce your energy bills (compared to the industry standard of about 80% efficiency)
