Green in the Loop 1908-2008 Architecture Walking Tour
Daley Plaza
Not your average architectural tour! While Chicago makes strides toward the future to become a green city, what did green mean a century ago? In the early 20th century, architects and engineers did not depend entirely upon the highly advanced technologies we take for granted today. Federal Goverment Support Grows for Green Building
With one of the world’s largest real estate portfolios, controlling more than 505,000 buildings, the U.S. government faces a unique challenge in reducing carbon emissions from buildings. Executive orders and legislation have been targeting energy efficiency and green building in government-owned and leased buildings since the early 1990s. Over the last two decades, federal green building principles have evolved, setting more rigorous requirements. Today, with the passage of the Energy Independence and Security Act of 2007 (EISA), federal buildings have more specific and ambitious green building requirements, including a goal of zero-net energy buildings by 2030.
This is a fantastic initiative that the federal government has taken and will drive the commercial market to be more green. If you are curious to learn more about this development visit the USGBC website. If you are a commercial property owner who wants to make your building green, you should stop by GreenBuild in Boston in November. This annual conference has thousands of vendors, workshops by the dozens and plenty of networking for green building professionals.

I Go Car Sharing

I GO is a non-profit arm of the Center for Neighborhood technology. (cnt.org) This car sharing service is an excellent resource for the Chicagoan that is looking to use a car once in a while. With rates starting at $6 an hour, which includes gas, insurance and the car, this is an excellent alternative to owning a car. GreenWerks has a few employees who are members and personally vouch for this great service.
Car sharing is a service that provides members with access to a fleet of eco-friendly vehicles on an hourly basis. Once you become a member (within 3-5 business days), you can reserve any car you like in advance and drive it for as long as your reservation. It is not like car pool because it is “yours” for that amount of time. It is not like car rental because you PAY BY THE HOUR. Therefore, the best and most cost-effective trips are those that are short in time and distance.
With the price of gas, city stickers, permit stickers, license plates, state stickers, city tickets, insurance and car maintenance- I GO Cars is an great alternative! Check them out online at igocars.org
Go Big by Going Green!
There’s more to going green that just driving a hybrid. Carting the family from place to place while helping preserve the planet is great, but there are ways to help save our planet without ever leaving the house. Living in Chicago doesn’t mean succumbing to the car exhaust and often a lack of space. Even a small home or apartment can offer a place to help conserve. Anyone can recycle, certainly in the city. There are programs in place that will allow most all of your waste products to be recycled.
Composting is also an eco-friendly option open to Chicago residents. Turn your old fruit and vegetable peels, old pieces of wood and grass shavings, even your weeds into usable green compost. A compost heap isn’t always a smelly proposition. There are self-contained composters that have no smell at all, and can provide an entire season worth of rich, fertile compost for you, using only a 3 by 5 section of yard! So do more than just “not-harming” the planet. Actively try to make it better.
Ideal Bite Chicago
Ideal Bite is a great site with bite size tips to go green. They talk about everything from paint, flooring, clothes and anything that can green in a small and manageable way. GreenWerks recently was featured on in the daily bite. So check out their site and sign up for the daily emails that we find helpful. With each post they show how the readers of the their emails can make a difference in the world. For our review the tip was- If 10,000 Chicago Biters choose an alternative, renewable material like bamboo instead of uncertified hardwood to floor their homes, we’ll keep 120,000 trees growing. Which is kind of one of those cool tips of the day!
Al Gore is supporting wind power
All Gore gave a recent talk about how we can use the same eco-friendly solutions will end our dependence on foreign oil, correct the climate crisis and create a rebirth in our economy. Wind power is one of the great resources that our country has an unlimited supply of.
If this video gets you excited- GreenWerks can help you decide and research the best alternative energy solution for your home or business. Wither it is geo-thermal, wind or solar GreenWerks has a solution for your project.
Note: At GreenWerks, we try to stay politically neutral, but we thought this was a good clip to show.
