Not your average architectural tour! While Chicago makes strides toward the future to become a green city, what did green mean a century ago? In the early 20th century, architects and engineers did not depend entirely upon the highly advanced technologies we take for granted today. Federal Goverment Support Grows for Green Building
With one of the world’s largest real estate portfolios, controlling more than 505,000 buildings, the U.S. government faces a unique challenge in reducing carbon emissions from buildings. Executive orders and legislation have been targeting energy efficiency and green building in government-owned and leased buildings since the early 1990s. Over the last two decades, federal green building principles have evolved, setting more rigorous requirements. Today, with the passage of the Energy Independence and Security Act of 2007 (EISA), federal buildings have more specific and ambitious green building requirements, including a goal of zero-net energy buildings by 2030.
This is a fantastic initiative that the federal government has taken and will drive the commercial market to be more green. If you are curious to learn more about this development visit the USGBC website. If you are a commercial property owner who wants to make your building green, you should stop by GreenBuild in Boston in November. This annual conference has thousands of vendors, workshops by the dozens and plenty of networking for green building professionals.
